BRAZIL: Federal gov't moves to suspend Rio Grande do Sul's debts
On 13 May Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad announced plans for a three-year suspension on the repayment of debts that the flood-stricken state of Rio Grande do Sul owes to the federal government.

COSTA RICA: Possible U-turn on suspended dam draws alarm
On 13 May Costa Rican indigenous and environmentalist groups slammed the possibility floated by President Rodrigo Chaves last week of reversing a 2018 decision by state-run electricity and telecommunications provider Grupo Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) to indefinitely suspend the ‘El Diquís’ hydroelectric megaproject.
