Malawi At-A-Glance

Malawi’s economy has been significantly weakened by a series of exogenous shocks and persistent macro-fiscal imbalances. Growth is projected to decline to 0.9% in 2022, from 2.8% in 2021, with lower agricultural output, erratic electricity supply, forex shortages affecting importation of raw materials and high global commodity prices. Economic growth is projected to slightly increase in 2023 but remain subdued. The economic recovery is projected to be gradual and significant risks remain.

Improving Livelihoods Among Poor Households in Malawi

The SSRLP continues to make satisfactory progress towards supporting 520,000 poor households implement climate smart enhanced public works; 258,000 extreme poor households with Social Cash Transfers and additional livelihoods support for both Social Cash Transfers and Public Works. Additionally, support has gone towards scaling up the Malawi social registry, also known as Unified Beneficiary Registry, which currently has data for over 67% of population making the UBR potent to support multiple targeted interventions.
